Mast o Khiar (Persian Cucumber and Yogurt Dip)
Mast o Khiar (Yogurt and Cucumber Dip) is a traditional Persian side dish made with yogurt, cucumber and herbs.
Masto khiar goes well as a side dish with many Persian rice dishes and also can be served as a healthy dip with any kind of chips and veggies. For another healthy dip with yogurt check out this Beet Yogurt Dip.
Yield: Serves 4
- 2 cups plain yogurt (I used 3%)
- 1 1/2 cups grated cucumber (no need to peel, grate on the large holes of your box grater)
- 2 teaspoons dried mint
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano leaves
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, optional
- 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, optional
- salt & black pepper to taste
Gently squeeze the grated cucumber in a colander to remove excess moisture.
Transfer the squeezed cucumber to a serving bowl and add the rest of ingredients. Mix well and adjust seasonings to taste.
Chill for at least 30 minutes and serve.
